In California, your car donation counts for this year’s taxes when the vehicle is physically picked up on or before December 31. With Rev Up Hope, powered by Heritage for the Blind, it takes about two minutes to start. Fill out a quick online form or call, get a fast call-back to schedule your free licensed tow, sign your title at pickup, and your deduction is locked in as of the pickup date under IRS rules. Same-day or next-business-day pickup is available in most metro areas when year-end slots are still open.
We understand California year-end crunch. Whether you’re in Los Angeles (from Echo Park and Sherman Oaks to Long Beach), the Bay Area (San Jose, Oakland, Fremont, Walnut Creek), San Diego County (Chula Vista, Escondido, Oceanside), Sacramento and the Central Valley, or anywhere from Riverside and San Bernardino to Santa Rosa, we work to get your vehicle off your driveway and your tax deduction secured before December 31. Your donated car, truck, SUV, or van doesn’t need to run, pass inspection, or have current registration. Proceeds support Heritage for the Blind’s services for people who are blind or visually impaired. Start now so your preferred pickup day doesn’t disappear as the calendar hits late December.
Your year-end donation timeline
Step 1 – Start the 2-minute form or call
About 2 minutesProvide your contact info, California pickup address, and basic vehicle details (make, model, VIN if handy). Submit the form any time, or call during business hours. This locks in your request and puts you in the queue for a year-end pickup slot.
Step 2 – Get a fast scheduling call-back
Within 1–2 business hours on weekdaysA Heritage for the Blind coordinator calls you to confirm details and offer the earliest available free tow times. In Los Angeles, Bay Area, San Diego, Sacramento, and most metro regions, same-day or next-business-day pickups are often available in December, while slots last.
Step 3 – Free licensed tow truck pickup
Same-day or next business day in most metro areasOn your pickup date, a licensed towing partner arrives at your California address—home, work, or a repair shop. The vehicle does not need to run. No smog check, inspection, or repairs are required. This physical pickup date is what the IRS treats as your donation date.
Step 4 – Sign the title and hand over keys
About 5–10 minutes at pickupYou sign the California title over to Heritage for the Blind (Rev Up Hope’s partner) and hand over the keys if available. The driver gives you a basic pickup receipt. Your tax deduction is now locked in as of this pickup date, as long as it’s on or before December 31.
Step 5 – Vehicle is sold and tax paperwork mailed
Within 30 days of saleYour car is transported, processed, and sold. Heritage for the Blind mails you a written acknowledgment or IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale, stating the gross sale price as required. You use this documentation when you file your federal tax return.
Year-end tax deduction facts
Donation date is the pickup date
For IRS purposes, your car donation date is when Heritage for the Blind (through Rev Up Hope) takes possession—usually the tow-truck pickup date. A pickup on or before December 31 counts for this tax year, even if the vehicle sells in the new year.
Form 1098-C and written acknowledgment
After your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind sends you a written acknowledgment or IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale. This shows the vehicle details and gross sale price, which you’ll need if you itemize and claim the deduction.
Deduction generally equals sale price
In most cases, the maximum federal deduction equals the gross sale price listed on your 1098-C, not a price guide estimate. There are limited exceptions when a charity uses or improves the vehicle, but most donated cars are sold and reported at sale price.
Itemizing on Schedule A
To claim a federal tax deduction for your car donation, you must itemize deductions using Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Your 1098-C or acknowledgment supports your claimed amount if the IRS ever asks for documentation.
30-day receipt timing vs. tax-year deadline
You do not need the 1098-C in hand by December 31. You just need your vehicle picked up by December 31. The acknowledgment can arrive later—as long as you have it by the time you file your return, you can claim the deduction for that tax year.
